Deafblind Association New Zealand

Tom Eats

Tom Eats joined the board in February 2024, and is motivated by the opportunity to improve conditions for deafblind people. Tom is deafblind, due to a condition called CAPOS syndrome which also affects co-ordination and balance.

Tom's professional background is mainly in research, strategy and engagement-related roles, and he is particularly interested in enabling participation in user testing as a way for deafblind people to apply their lived experience to improve the design of environments that will in turn make their lives easier.

Tom likes jazz music, photography, being active and walking the dog in Wellington, where he lives with his wife. Tom is also a member of the Board of the Research Association of New Zealand (RANZ) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts in the UK.
